100 000 inhabitants of Kumanovo - hostages of Albanian guerrilas

Kumanovo

Kumanovo, a town in the north of Macedonia (FYROM), world-wide known as a place where 10 June, 1999 the Military-Technical agreement between NATO and S.R. Yugoslavia was signed.
Herewith terminating NATO bombing campaign of Yugoslavia, is facing today a real catastrophe.
Kumanovo, a town of about 100 000 inhabitants receives drinking water supply from nearby accumulative lakes Glaznja and Lipkovo.
Since 3 May this year the region of Lipkovo Lake is controlled by Albanian guerrilas who closed its outflow valves in the direction of lower, Glaznje Lake which directly supplies the town with water.
Kumanovo has been receiving increasingly less water since then. Serious restrictions of water use were established, but they were without much effect.
On the 6 June 2001 water supply was already reduced from 150l/s to less then 10l/s.
However, today water supply of Kumanovo has been completely cut off. Medical service in Kumanovo, its Surgery Department, Obstetric and Gynaecological Department, Laboratory, and the Centre for Dialysis had to be closed.
The town has just a few small local, natural water sources, which could not compensate even the most essential needs.
If the outflow valves on the Lipkovo Lake will not be opened in an immediate future, epidemics of typhoid, dysentery and other infectious diseases will, without any doubt, spread which will be with unforeseeable consequences.
This will almost certainly literally annihilate the town Kumanovo, i.e. its citizens. Please note that Kumanovo is a ethnically mixed city so the sufferings are equally 'distributed' among its citizens Macedonians, Albanians and Serbs.
For many days the world mass media have been silent, refusing to announce this imminent catastrophe of Kumanovo inhabitants. Would you, please, distribute this letter as wide as you can.
Please, help save the citizens of Kumanovo!
