The Bush administration is deeply divided over the decision it must soon
make about whether to allow federal funding for research on stem cells that
using fertilized eggs derived from in vitro fertilization. Many scientists,
however, believe that these cells could hold the key to curing diseases and
conditions such as spinal cord injury, diabetes, Alzheimer's, and
Parkinson's. A recent survey showed that a commanding majority of Americans
of all political persuasions support research involving these potentially
life-saving cells.
The Christopher Reeve Paralysis Foundation believes that both adult and
human embryonic stem cells have a remarkable therapeutic potential to save
and restore lives damaged by injury and disease, and endorses the
advancement of responsible stem cell research.
