IMF approves 26m dollar poverty reduction loan for Tanzania

DAR ES SALAAM

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has approved a 26 million-dollar loan under a Poverty Reduction and Growth Facility (PRGF) package for Tanzania, the organisation said.
"Tanzania's good performance has encouraged the international community to provide a steady flow of highly concessional assistance and debt relief," the IMF said in a statement released here late Wednesday.
It said the loan was approved by the IMF's executive board in Washington earlier this week. It was the second tranche of a package.
The IMF approved a 174 million-dollar PRGF package in March to be disbursed over a three-year period.
According to the statement, Tanzania's implementation of macro-economic policy reform remained impressive. Gross domestic product had increased by 4.9 percent in 2000 and inflation had dropped to 5.1 percent by end of June 2001.
The east African country's external reserve account had continued to improve due to increased exports, mainly of gold and fish.
