Peruvian President Alejandro Toledo Monday was set to present to Congress an emergency plan to create new jobs and battle poverty.
The proposed legislation provides for 50 percent of privatization proceeds to go to road construction and 10 percent to launch a program to bring running water to remote rural regions.
During a television address on Sunday night, Toledo said the government already had set aside the equivalent of 142 million dollars to build roads in rural areas.
A housing construction program also will be launched within 90 days, he said, adding that 50,000 homes would be built.
The president said he would order rigorous audits of all government bodies, starting with the presidency, as part of a program to battle corruption.
Toledo said the projects demonstrated he was fulfilling the promises he made before taking office in July. |
