The standard of living in Russia is lower than it was before the 1998 economic crisis, with 44 million Russians living below the poverty line, according to statistics committee figures for the first part of the year.
Although average real income in the first five months of 2001 was six percent higher than in the same period last year, the level was still 78 percent of the pre-August 1998 level, the committee said.

IMF releases 8.3 million euros to Burkina Faso to fight poverty
OUAGADOUGOU
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has released a total of 5.5 billion CFA francs (8.38 million euros, 7.1 million dollars) to Burkina Faso for poverty alleviation schemes, the IMF said here Tuesday.
The three-yearly programme was approved on September 10, 1999 by the Washington-based body.

Japan has granted Benin more than 750 million CFA francs (some 985,000 dollars) to fight poverty and child trafficking, the finance ministry said Tuesday.
